Rugby League BY VICKY BAUNKE The Nowek Ltd general director Benjamin Shelley has followed the legacy of his father Terry Shirley as the life time sponsor of the Royals rugby football league club in Goroka, Eastern Highlands province. Shelley presented two sets of jerseys for the Nowek Royals men’s and women’s teams competing in the local competition at the Goroka police station last Sunday. Police personnel, the supporters and players were there for the presentation. The club was established in 1991 with the the purpose of enforcing community policing and public relations in community to promote law and order through sportsmanship. Senior police officer Sergeant Jehosaphat Puang, who was a former Royals player, thanked the sponsor Wine Star Limited’s Sarah Shelley and Nowek Ltd Benjamin Shelley for their continuous support. “This sponsor is a morale boost for the players and the team that consists of police personnel and players from the nearby communities,” Puang said. Royals club president Peter Panda Mondo also thanked the sponsors for their continuous support for almost 20 years. The RFLC has been known for producing some of the best rugby league talents who have been part of the team that won the 2018 Digicel Cup and the PNG Kumuls side. The women’s team, formed three years ago, recently won the Ipatas Cup women’s rugby league challenge in Lae.
