The ministry shall also actively engage with the state governments, the state health ministers and principals of various medical colleges. Additionally, this shall be taken forward with the frontline health functionaries that implement the National Health Mission (NHM) in close association with the communities. The thrust for popularising Fit India movement shall now see convergence of activities of both the Ministries, as the goal of this national movement is to encourage people towards positive, preventive and promotive health and wellness, Dr Vardhan stated. Encouraging people to adopt healthy lifestyle with healthy eating habits has been one of the primary focus of the health ministry, he said. “We have launched the ‘Eat Right India’ initiative of FSSAI which has seen various promotional activities being rolled out, including the ongoing Eat Right Mela at Jawaharlal Nehra Stadium,” Dr Vardhan stated. FSSAI is also creating awareness about transfats in processed foods.Preeti Sudan, Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, Radheyshyam Julaniya, Sports Secretary, Pawan Agarwal, CEO, FSSAI and senior officers of the Health Ministry were also present during the meeting. Suicide and the Workplace

first_imgLast week, two celebrities took their lives, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain.  To be more specific, they committed suicide. It is important to say the word “suicide” because many media reports, at least initially, did not.  There is still, for some, discomfort with mental health issues in general and suicide in particular. As with #metoo, high-profile cases draw our attention to an issue that is not limited to the high-profile.   Alarmingly, the suicide rate has increased by 25 percent since 1999.But what does this have to do with employers?  Do employers have any legal duty to prevent suicide? For the most part, the answer is generally “no.”  But that does not mean employers should not focus on the issue. The law sets a minimum.  Responsible employers who genuinely care about their employees go further. What can you do as an employer? What should HR do?Educate yourself and your leaders on suicide.  Severe depression, often coupled with substance abuse, is one of the primary causes of suicide.  Do not expect employees to just “deal with it.”  Substitute “cancer” for “depression” and you will see how cold and/or ignorant someone may sound if they suggest mental illness is weakness.  Offer your employees access to professional help by way of an employee assistance program (an “EAP”).  As we all know, an EAP is a very inexpensive way to offer employees anonymous support for myriad issues from substance abuse to marital problems to suicidal ideation. If you don’t have an EAP, make the business case to get one. Share with your employees information about the national suicide prevention hotline.  I will do that just now: 1-800-273-Talk (8255). Why would you not? Emphasize when you discuss your health benefits both physical and mental health.  It does not hurt to message explicitly that there is no stigma in getting mental health support—no more than getting dialysis. Consult with a professional if an employee is talking about suicide, directly or indirectly, or if you have objective reason to be concerned about an employee (e.g., talking about helplessness). Obtain guidance on how to speak with the employee.  Yes, there may be some risk under the ADA in removing the employee from the workplace and requiring an assessment (‘perceived disability’ claim).  But that risk must be balanced against the human risk (among others) if your fear contributes to the employee’s decision to end it all.  Further, with careful planning, while the ADA risk cannot be eliminated, it can be minimized materially. Respond to disparaging, demeaning or hurtful comments about mental disabilities.  Such comments may increase the unwarranted shame and the risk of suicide.  Indeed, address as part of your efforts to educate your workforce on unacceptable behavior of a harassing nature. Revisit your wellness program.  Is there enough focus on mental health?  Do not assume the answer is yes. We need to add light to the issue so that people do not hide for fear of societal judgment and the life-threatening risks that go with it.  Focus on respect in your leadership training. Being abusive may not be illegal but it is bad behavior that may take its victim to an even darker place.  Bullies are weak but they inflict penetrating pain. Get help yourself if you have had thoughts about suicide.  It is not weakness.  I cannot think of any greater act of strength.     The 2018 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition will feature these sessions on mental health:Starting the Dialogue: Depression in the WorkplaceManaging Mental Health Conditions in the Workplacelast_img read more

Trudeau meets world leaders promotes Canada for Security Council seat

first_imgNEW YORK, N.Y. – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau found himself in a whirlwind, 10-meeting day in New York City on Wednesday as he prepared Canada’s campaign for a temporary seat on the United Nations Security Council.Trudeau had one-on-one meetings with seven world leaders, bumped into two former U.S. presidents, attended three public events at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum with activist Melinda Gates and joined a youth rally at Madison Square Garden.“It’s always a busy time at the UN,” Trudeau said, as he sat down with the president of Tajikistan, before meeting the leaders of the Netherlands, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Uganda and Indonesia. One spokesman said this might be a personal record for the number of bilaterals in a single day. It’s part of Canada’s effort to win a Security Council seat in 2021, a campaign that has not formally been launched but which officials say is a underlying theme of this week’s myriad events before Trudeau speaks to the General Assembly on Thursday.“There’s a lot of work that goes into this,” said Trudeau spokesman Cameron Ahmad. “Obviously we have a voice on the world stage …. We generally believe Canada can play an active role.”The prime minister has also been promoting what he calls a progressive trade agenda. He told different New York audiences that bolstering labour protections, gender equality and Indigenous rights in trade agreements is designed to help more people feel the benefits of trade and generate public support for international commerce. The prime minister participated in an armchair discussion with U.S. philanthropist Gates to talk about women’s rights before speaking to a noisy arena where thousands of youngsters celebrated engagement in politics at We Day UN.He spoke about feminism with Gates. He told her how his father believed in human rights, but couldn’t be called a feminist — and how Trudeau himself had a sudden epiphany one day when he realized the term applies to anyone who believes in working for greater equality.“There is a reclaiming of that word, in a good way,” he said.Trudeau chatted with Bill Clinton, who spoke before him at the Bloomberg event. He later chatted with Barack Obama, who spoke after him at the Gates event. And in this day of diplomatic speed-dating, he kept running into the Prime Minister Mark Rutte of Holland.“Twice in one day. What a pleasure,” Trudeau said as he sat down with Rutte, who had participated in the same Bloomberg trade panel. They saluted the implementation of the Canada-Europe CETA trade agreement and Canada-Netherlands co-operation in a variety of areas.Rutte said: ”Our history goes back a very long time. To the Second World War. What you did — what Canadians did — to liberate the Netherlands we will never, never, never forget.”Trudeau’s meetings with leaders from a diverse array of regions also involved a selection of the world’s ongoing crises, Ahmad said. The meeting with Indonesia was to include an exchange about atrocities against Myanmar’s Muslim minority, while those with the Latin Americans would touch on the political and economic crisis roiling Venezuela, he said.Trudeau doesn’t have a meeting planned with U.S. President Donald Trump — but his wife Sophie Gregoire attended a lunch hosted by Melania Trump among several events she attended in New York.last_img read more

Twitter suspends white nationalists as it enforces new rules

first_imgNEW YORK, N.Y. – Twitter suspended the accounts of well-known white nationalists Monday, moving swiftly to enforce its new rules aimed at reducing what it deems abusive content. The account of far-right group Britain First, a small group that regularly posts inflammatory videos purporting to show Muslims engaged in acts of violence, was among the first to go dark. The individual accounts of two of its leaders, Jayda Fransen and Paul Golding, were also suspended.President Donald Trump caused a stir last month when he retweeted a post by Fransen, drawing criticism from British Prime Minister Theresa May. Fransen and Golding were arrested in Belfast last week for allegedly stirring up hatred.Twitter said it would not comment on individual accounts. The company has emphasized that it takes into account many factors before making any enforcement decision, including context of the post, cultural and political considerations and the severity of the violation.Twitter’s actions drew praise from civil rights groups.Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, commended Twitter “for taking these significant steps to tackle hate on their platform.” The group Muslim Advocates, which had publicly called for the removal of Britain First’s account, applauded Twitter for “updating its policies and taking steps today to remove violent and hateful accounts from its platform.”The guidelines, announced a month ago and put into force this week, address hateful images or symbols, including those attached to user profiles.Monitors at the San Francisco company will weigh hateful imagery in the same way they do graphic violence and adult content. If a user wants to post symbols or images that might be considered hateful, the post must be marked “sensitive media.” Other users would then see a warning that would allow them to decide whether to view the post.Twitter is also prohibiting users from abusing or threatening others through their profiles or usernames. The company also now bans accounts affiliated with “organizations that use or promote violence against civilians to further their causes.”The account for Jared Taylor, who heads the New Century Foundation, was among those suspended, along with his organization’s flagship online publication, American Renaissance.Taylor said he immediately appealed the suspension but swiftly received a reply from Twitter informing him that his account would not be restored, which he interpreted to mean he had been permanently banned. He said Twitter determined his account was “affiliated with a violent extremist group,” an allegation he denied.“Of all the preposterous things they could have said about me or American Renaissance, I can’t think of anything more preposterous,” Taylor said.New Century Foundation has been recognized as charity by the IRS, a decision that has drawn criticism from civil rights advocates. Taylor has said his group raises money for the benefit of the “white race.”Brad Griffin, who blogs under the name Hunter Wallace on the website Occidental Dissent, said in blog post that he was also suspended, along with Michael Hill, president of the League of the South, the Traditionalist Workers Party and others. American Renaissance and Occidental Dissent both referred readers to an online chat site frequented by white nationalists. The white nationalist Richard Spencer, whose account was not suspended, tweeted that he had lost more than a hundred followers in the past 24 hours and noted that he didn’t “see any systematic method to the #TwitterPurge.”There appeared to be some inconsistencies. Twitter allowed David Duke to keep the message “It’s Ok To Be White” as his header, even though the same phrase was hidden by the “sensitive material” warning on his pinned tweet.Emma Llanso, director of the free expression project at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said the new guidelines represent a substantial change for Twitter’s policies. But, he added, it’s not going to be immediately clear to all users what falls within the new prohibitions.“It’s essential that they provide clarity to the users whose content is removed,” said Llanso, whose non-profit is a member of the Trust and Safety Council group of outside organizations advising Twitter. While the new guidelines are now in play, the social media company continues to work out internal monitoring tools and it is revamping its appeals process for banned or suspended accounts.Users can now report profiles, or users, that they consider to be in violation of Twitter policy. Previously, users could only report individual posts they deemed offensive. While more content is banned, the company has provided more leeway for itself after it was criticized for strict rules that resulted in account suspensions. There was a backlash against Twitter after it suspending the account of actress Rose McGowan who opened a public campaign over sexual harassment and abuse, specifically naming Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Twitter eventually reinstated McGowan’s account and said that it had been suspended because of a tweet that violated its rules on privacy.“In our efforts to be more aggressive here, we may make some mistakes and are working on a robust appeals process,” Twitter said in a blog post Monday.___This story has been corrected to read that Michael Hill is of the League of the South, not the Traditionalist Workers Party.last_img read more

These are young guys and they will live and learn with time. Unless you make a mistake or falter, you will never learn,” she said. He is a true superstar, in terms of how he comes across, in terms of how he plays, how he is with the youngsters, he is so humble, he is always on time, he is just unbelievable and he is so much fun at the same time.” The actor added that her team broke even long time ago and the ultimate goal is to win a maiden IPL title. “We broke even a long time ago.
