TheSmithsonian Institution stands at the center of the richscientific, artistic, and cultural heritage of the United States.The Institution’s 174-year-old mandate – the increase and diffusionof knowledge – requires broad vision, expansive reach, clearpriorities, and dynamic leadership.The Under Secretary for Administration shapes and directs asignificant portion of the Smithsonian’s activities, with authorityand responsibility for the planning, oversight, management, andstability of all major financial and administrative activities ofthe Institution. The Smithsonian seeks an Under Secretary forAdministration who can team with the respective Under Secretariesfor Museum and Culture, Science and Research, and Education. Thesepositions all report to the Deputy Secretary who integratesdecision-making and resource allocation for the Secretary.Additionally, the position interfaces with other senior leadershipin communications, fundraising, legal, equal employment andsupplier diversity as well as the Board of Regents.The Smithsonian’s Under Secretary for Administration will needto manage complexity, engage with a broad variety of internal andexternal constituencies, forge strategic relationships, embracechange and new ways of doing business, and provide transformativeleadership. The successful candidate will be an active proponent ofOne Smithsonian approaches, a creative problem solver, and askilled manager who will lead the Institution’s majoradministrative functions in providing exquisite service. The nextUnder Secretary for Administration will have the chance to reshapethe Institution’s infrastructure of services to create ahigh-performing network of activities supporting the Smithsonian’smission. Critically, the Institution is embarking on theconstruction and programing of two new national museums in the areaof American Women’s history and Latino history. The Under Secretaryfor Administration oversees a team of more than 2500 employees.The ideal candidate will have ten more years of executive leveladministrative and financial management experience withdemonstrated success in a role of complexity in government,academe, or the private sector (museum experience is a plus). Inaddition, the Under Secretary for Administration will haveexperience with developing and implementing business, financial,and administrative strategies and solutions for complexorganizations, as well as experience leading large-scale capitalconstruction initiatives.
