first_imgThe Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at CoastalCarolina University invites applications for the position of Chairof the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies startingAugust 1, 2021.The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies (LIS)aspires to create a diverse and inclusive community of scholarsthat cultivates curiosity, inspires creativity, fostersinterdisciplinary understanding, and encourages pedagogicalinnovation. The department offers a major with two possibleconcentrations: Hispanic Studies and Multiple Languages. Studentscan minor in Chinese, French, German, Spanish, or Spanish forHealth Professions, and take classes in Arabic, Russian, andItalian. The department also houses the minor in Language andIntercultural Studies, which allows students to apply coursework inone or more of the seven languages offered in the department andclasses in related disciplines. Students in the department areencouraged to double major and combine their studies withadditional coursework and complementary degree programs towhich LIS faculty actively contribute, including minorsin African and African Diaspora Studies, Asian Studies, Caribbeanand Latin American Studies, European Studies, Islamic Studies,Middle Eastern Studies, Russian and Eurasian Studies, and the newminor in Film and Production Studies. Department memberscollaborate to support diverse programs across the college, amongothers Intelligence and Security Studies and the Centers andInstitutes housed in the college. The department supports theUniversity Center for Global Education with faculty regularlyleading or co-leading study abroad programs to such locations asSpain, Costa Rica, Germany, and Italy. Since fall 2020, thedepartment also houses the new Intercultural Language ResourceCenter.Qualifications:Candidates must hold a terminal degree in a world language andpossess a scholarly record appropriate for appointment at the rankof Associate or Full Professor. The ideal candidate must bring arecord of progressive responsibility in leadership positions withexperience as department chair, program director, coordinator, orpositions with similar responsibilities. Candidates willdemonstrate their capacity to lead in a multicultural setting andtheir commitment to excellence in teaching and research. Ofparticular interest is evidence of management ability, budgetoversight, curriculum development, program assessment, and successin student and faculty mentorship. Candidates will have a provenrecord of pedagogical and program innovation and experience inprogram building and cross-disciplinary collaboration.Responsibilities:The Chair in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studiesis responsible for program assessment, course scheduling, budgetaryoversight, curriculum development, and mentorship of faculty andstudents. The Chair will be expected to collaborate with faculty toadvance the study of languages on campus and build bridges to thelocal community to recruit students and continue the growth of thelanguage programs at Coastal Carolina University. The Chair willsupervise approximately 18 full-time faculty and 6-10 teachingassociates, coordinate with administrative staff, and work closelywith the fellow department Chairs, the Dean and Associate Deans,the Provost, and the Directors of the interdisciplinary centers andinstitutes in the Edwards College, most importantly theIntercultural Language Resource Center.Coastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberalarts institution located in Conway, South Carolina, just nine milesfrom the Atlantic coastal resort city of Myrtle Beach.
